How to become a Bridgestone instructor

If you want to be a driving instructor, you need to be 21 or over and have held a full driving licence for at least three and a half years. If you do have more than 5 points on your licence the DSA may reject your application. Bridgestone driving school will guarantee fully qualified instruction by our qualified male female ADI's. Just to further clarify the structure of your training will be as follows: - The course will consist of

  • ADI Part 1 - Theory
  • ADI Part 2 - Practical Driving
  • ADI Part 3 - Instructional Ability



ADI Part 1 Training

The part one will consist of 7 hours in-class study/mock assessments. One further session will cover hazard perception test.

Your test will take place at a Theory Test centre in your home town or city. The test consists of 100 multiple choice questions on subjects such as Road Procedure, Car Control, Basic Mechanical Knowledge, various publications including the Highway Code.

The time allowed for this examination is 90 minutes. The subjects are arranged into four bands and you must achieve an 80% pass mark in each band and an overall pass mark of 85%.

You must then complete a Hazard Perception test with a minimum pass mark of 57 out of a possible 75 points. The cost of the Part one test is currently £50. You are allowed unlimited attempts at this examination.




ADI Part 2 Training

This 20 hour course will prepare you for your test of Driving Ability. In order to pass this test you must reach an exceptional standard of driving at advanced level.

Usually, you will use your own car for the ADI Part 2 Training course and the ADI Part 2 test; providing it is suitable. If your car is not suitable, or you would prefer, we can provide you with the school training vehicle for your Part 2 training course.

Below is a brief outline of the course content and training areas covered:

  • Eyesight check
  • Initial assessment of current driving skills
  • 20 hours in car tuition using your own vehicle
  • One to one training
  • MSM PSL ADA routine development
  • Advanced observation skills training
  • All pre-set maneuvers
  • Motorway and/or dual carriageway driving skills
  • Eco driving
  • Preparation for the part 2 test
  • "Show me - tell me" questions
  • Full verbal de-brief between lessons



The Test

The Part 2 test will be conducted by a Driving Standards Agency Supervising Examiner. You will choose the location of your test from a list of nationwide test centres.

The test is preceded by an eyesight test where you must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 90 feet.

You will drive for approximately one hour and you will be expected to drive in a business like and disciplined manner along a varied route.

The cost of the Part Two test is currently £82. You are only allowed a maximum of three attempts at this examination.

After passing the part two test, you could start work as a trainee driving instructor.

ADI Part three Training

To be successful at part three, you will need to have an excellent knowledge of all the subjects that any new driver may need to be taught.

In preparation for this test we will teach you how to teach others. You will receive 40 hours of one to one tuition.

Your course will include classroom tuition and in-car tuition where your tutor will role play a variety of learner drivers at various stages of development and this will enable you to develop a wide range of training skills which you will need to master in order to pass the part three test.

The ADI part 3 Training course will develop your skills in the following areas:

The Core Competencies

  • Identification of faults - what went wrong
  • Fault analysis - why, when, where & how the fault occurred
  • Remedial action - how to put it right and the dangers of not correcting the faults

Instructional Techniques

  • Level of Instruction - tailoring your instruction to the learner's needs
  • Planning - knowing when to give instruction & how to deliver it effectively
  • Control - of the lesson, the learner and the car and keeping everyone safe
  • Communication Skills - having the learner understand your instructions in a manner they understand and respond to
  • Q & A Techniques - being able to ask or answer the right question at the right time in order to get the response required whether verbally or through actions, from the learner
  • Feedback & Encouragement - vital in learning development, knowing when, where and how to praise or point out faults
  • Use of Controls - knowing when, why and what actions to take after using them
  • Attitude & Approach - creating, establishing and maintaining an effective learning environment


The Test

The part three test is approximately 1 Hour long and can be conducted in an area close to your home. It is split into two role playing exercises.

The examiner will set the scene for you by describing what kind of pupil he/she will be role playing. In the first phase of the test he/she will play the part of a novice or absolute beginner, whereas in the second phase he will play the part of a pupil who is at test standard. Most of our students find that the part three course is exciting and challenging.

The cost of the Part three test is currently £82. You are only allowed a maximum of three attempts at this examination.
